Back of the Hill Urban Wild, Mission Hill |
EarthWorks' Urban Wilds Program is working to restore Boston's city-owned natural areas. The wilds, which total 250 acres at 39 separate sites scattered among 10 of the city's 16 neighbor-hoods, represent the full variety of Boston’s natural history, ranging from remnant salt marshes in East Boston to the meadows and forests of Hyde Park, Roslindale, and West Roxbury. These remaining natural areas provide vital ecological functions, such as improve-ments to air and water quality, provision of fish and wildlife habitat, a stop-over for migrating birds, soil stabilization, and flood control, and afford city residents the opportunity to experience and learn about nature close to home.
The Program partners with with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department Urban Wilds Iniative, which oversees the wilds, and with volunteer and neighborhood groups to clean up and restore native plant communities after decades of abuse and neglect. The program connects urban residents to the wilds through volunteer service projects, educational events, door-to-door outreach, and community meetings.
