Boston Nature Center
The Boston Nature Center in Mattapan is maintained by the Massachusetts
Audubon Society. In 1998 and 1999 EarthWorks planted a large orchard
around the outside of the community garden at the Nature Center.
As of the summer of 2003, this orchard features sixteen apple trees,
two plum trees, eight pear trees, eight cherry trees, five spice
bushes, nine hazels, three pecan trees, two pawpaws, ten juneberries,
eight currants, a chestnut, and several raspberries, blackberries,
blueberries, cranberries, elderberries. In total we planted over
100 plants at the Nature Center.
- Location: 500 Walk Hill St.
- Plants: Sixteen apples, two plums, eight pears, eight cherries, five spice bushes, nine hazels, three pecans, two pawpaws, ten juneberries, eight currants, ten raspberries and blackberries, nineteen blueberries and cranberries, two elderberries, and a chestnut tree.
- Accessibility: The fruit is only reachable over the fence of the community garden; call the Boston Nature Center for questions about or permission to harvest from specific trees.
