Setback Tree in Jamaica Plain

WHAT IS A SETBACK TREE?

Setback trees are trees planted on privately owned property near public rights of way. They benefit the whole community by creating pleasant, quieter, shady, and less windy places to live. Individual setback trees that help make up the wider urban tree canopy also increase the overall sustainability and health of a city by creating wildlife habitat, absorbing storm runoff, moderating temperatures, and trapping the particulate matter that can cause asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Setback trees tend to live longer and healthier lives because committed property owners or residents care for them. Unlike most street trees, they usually grow out of harm’s way from typical urban tree hazards such as snowplows, sidewalk salt, telephone wires, cars, and impermeable pavement.
