Hennigan Elementary School
Hennigan Elementary school is active in the EarthWorks Outdoor Classrooms Program. The school was planted in 1990, and now students help care for the fruit trees that are there. There are three cherries, six plums, two apples, a peach, two apricots, and a crabapple, along with raspberry patches, black and white mulberries, currants, elderberries, and filazels. Many of the orchard trees are behind a locked gate, but the apricots and two plums are easily accessible.
- Location: 200 Heath St.
- Plants: Upper field – Two Northstar cherries, two apples, three plums (Stanley Prune, Ozark Premier, and Toka), three raspberry patches, a peach, a crabapple, mulberries (Black & White), elderberries, and two filazels. Educational garden – Three beach plums, two grapes, two currants, a Northstar cherry, and raspberries. On Heath St. – Two apricots and two plums.
- Accessibility: Most of the orchard is locked. Do not harvest when classes are in session.
Agassiz Elementary School
The fruit trees at Agassiz Elementary School were planted in 1993. They are now tended by the students as part of the Outdoor Classrooms Program. The trees include eleven apple trees, three plums, a peach, a cherry tree, two filazels, three juneberries, and currants.
- Location: 20 Child St.
- Plants: Eleven apples, three plums (Stanley Prune, Japanese/American Hybrid), three juneberries, two filazels, Red Haven peach, cherry, rosa rugosa, black currants.
- Accessibility: Please only gather fruit from school sites when school is not in session.
Nira Rock Urban Wild
Nira Rock Park features both an urban wild area and an urban orchard. There are five apple trees (two of which are wild), four pears, a cherry with three root sprouts, a plum, and three filazels as well as grapes, juneberries, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, and currants. - Location: At the end of Nira St. off of Day St.
- Plants: Five apples (two of which are wild), 4 Bartlett pears, 4 >Northstar cherries, a Stanley Prune plum, two grapes, three filazels, three juneberries, and many raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, currants.
- Accessibility: Publicly accessible.
New Day Community Garden
The New Day Community Garden is owned by the Boston Natural Areas Network. EarthWorks planted two grape vines, two plum trees, a cherry tree, a pear tree, two kiwis and raspberries in 1993, all of which are being tended by community gardeners and doing quite well.
- Location: Intersection of Day St. and Roundhill St.
- Plants: Two grape vines, two plums (American & Toka), a Seckel pear, a Northstar cherry, raspberries, and two kiwis.
- Accessibility: Easily accessible.
Blessed Sacrament Church
EarthWorks planted two apples and a plum in front of their rectory. Since the trees are on church property please ask permission before picking their fruit.
- Location: 365 Centre St.
- Plants: Freedom and MacFree apples, Beach plum.
- Accessibility: Not publicly accessible.
Oakdale Community Garden
For several years EarthWorks used a portion of the Oakdale Community Garden as its nursery. EarthWorks grew and grafted trees to be planted in the urban orchards all over the city. The Oakdale Community Garden has shown outstanding leadership and dedication to the trees at this site, and is now the sole steward of the trees. The Oakdale Community Garden harvests all of the fruit from these trees.
- Location: Intersection of Oakdale St. and Lawndale Terrace.
- Plants: Plum, a cherry, apples, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, juneberries, nannyberry, blackberry, buffalo and black currants, filbert bushes, Red Haven peach, Stanley Prune plum, and Seckel pear.
- Accessibility: This site is not publicly accessible.
Granada Park & Community Garden
In 1995 EarthWorks supplemented this community garden with a hazelnut, three juneberry bushes, currants, and grape vines. Both gardeners and the Boston Natural Areas Network are responsible for the management at the site.
- Location: End of Chilcott Place off of Washington St.
- Plants: Hazel, three juneberries, two currants (Black & Buffalo), and a grape vine.
- Accessibility: Publicly accessible.
Curley Middle School
Curley Middle School is an active school in EarthWorks’ Outdoor Classroom Program. Since 1996 students have been caring for the plants there, which include a three apples, three sour cherries, a peach, three plums, two nectarines, two pears, three kiwis, two filazels, two hazels, juneberries, and currants.
- Location: 493 Centre St.
- Plants: Two Northstar cherries, three apples (Cortland, Liberty, and Mission Hill Striped), three plums (Stanley Prune & Peach), two pears (Seckel & Parker), three Hardy kiwis, two filazels, two hazels, a crabapple, a Belle of Georgia peach, two nectarines, juneberries, and currants.
- Accessibility: Only harvest the fruit and nuts when school is not in session.
