Cambridge Sites:
Fruition Project planting on Memorial Drive
The park on Memorial Drive next to the west side of the Boston
University bridge was originally planted in 1982 as part of Boston’s
Fruition Project. EarthWorks began to keep an eye on the site in
1995 but never directly managed it. The site is easily accessible
and you can still find two mature mulberry trees, grapes, and raspberries
there.
- Location: Next to the North end of the Boston University bridge.
- Plants: Two mulberry trees, raspberries, and a grape vine.
- Accessibility: Accessible.
Fruition Project planting behind Cambridge
City Hall
The raspberry patch behind the Cambridge City Hall building is another
one of the Fruition Project’s plantings. EarthWorks oversaw
the site for a time, but it is likely that the raspberries are now
being cared for by Food for Free.
- Location: Behind Cambridge City Hall near Inman St.
- Plants: Raspberries.
- Accessibility: Accessible.
Fruition Project planting on Ellery St.
Originally planted with a few pears and raspberries by Boston’s
Fruition Project, a single pear is all that remains on Ellery St.
near Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. The pear bears well
however, and is easily accessible.
- Location: On Ellery St. between Broadway and Cambridge St.
- Plants: Pear tree.
- Accessibility: Accessible.
North Cambridge Catholic High School
Two hazels and two red currants were planted in front of North Cambridge
Catholic High School in 1990. While the hazels have suffered a bit
of unintended abuse at the hands of gardeners who didn’t know
better, all four plants are still there, and the currants are thriving.
Plants are in front of the school.
- Location: 40 Norris St.
- Plants: Two hazels and two Red currants.
- Accessibility: Accessible, but please do not harvest while school is in session.
Morse School
The Morse School is one of many sites that we use for our Outdoor
Classrooms Program. The trees have been there since 1990 and
are tended by the students. While there are several trees at the
school, those that are accessible to the public are in front of the
school.
- Location: 40 Granite St.
- Plants: Out front: 2 apricots, apple. Courtyard: apple, peach.
- Accessibility: Please only collect fruit when school is not in session, and consider calling first.
Aberdeen Ave.
Planted in 1995 along the meridian of Aberdeen Ave., this site’s
future is in question. The two sweet cherries, peach, and nectarine
trees may have to be moved to an as-of-yet-unknown
location because of planned construction on the street.
- Location: Median of the street in front of 101 Aberdeen Ave.
- Plants: Two cherries, peach, nectarine.
- Accessibility: Publicly accessible.
Peabody School
The five apple trees at the Peabody School in Cambridge (previously
known as the Fitzgerald School) are too young to bear fruit yet.
They were planted with EarthWorks’ help in 2001 and are being
cared for by the school in conjunction with the City Sprouts Program.
- Location: 70 Rindge Ave.
- Plants: 5 apples.
- Accessibility: Please do not collect the fruit while school is in session.
